I was watching some footage of Anderson Cooper saving a young boy's life in Haiti and I started thinking about natural disasters. The tsunami in 2004, hurricane Katrina, this earthquake (and aftershock) in Haiti, the wild fires in California, and all the other disasters in between.

You know as well as I do that there is no way to insure yourself against being in a state, country or area that experiences a natural disaster. There is no insurance you can buy that makes sure you are never affected by a tornado, a hurricane, a flood or a fire. But there are so many different kinds of insurance you can buy that will protect you and your loved ones against the effects of these natural disasters and other terrible things that can happen to you.

There is homeowner's and flood insurance to protect your home against theft and disaster, auto insurance to protect your car and renters insurance to protect your stuff if you live inside an apartment that is damaged. You can get property insurance for your business in case a customer or client has an accident and liability insurance that protects you against a lawsuit. You can have errors and omissions insurance to protect you against accidentally causing harm to a client or customer. There is life insurance to protect your loved one's financial situation in the event of your death and to give them some breathing room after losing an income source.

This is just the tip of the iceberg because there is some type of insurance available for almost every possible damaging incident. Almost. Do you know what damaging incident there is no insurance for?

Not buying insurance. In order to enjoy the peace of mind and protection offered by insurance, you must have it. If you do not have insurance, and tragedy happens, it will be too late.

So take some time this week to review all your insurance policies to make sure you have high enough benefits and think about the types on insurance you don't have. Hopefully, you will never even need that insurance--but do you really want to take that chance?
