I have lived in the same house for 10 years now. I haven't had to change my address, phone number or anything in a decade. I started wondering today what difficulties might be encountered if we decided to move.

If you've moved recently, were there any difficulties or issues you encountered that you didn't think of ahead of time?

I too have resided in the same location for the past 10 years. I recently became a preferred customer with my cable company and reduced my bill by $50 a month because I have been with them for so long and have continued to always pay my bills on time.

I often dream about the day that I move into a big house where I will spend the rest of my life and then those dreams are shattered with the thought of 8 cat carriers and boxes surrounding my every being....

Yeah, the prospect of moving is daunting. I guess the happy anticipation of your new start gives you the energy to get it all done.

I move constantly. I'm a city dweller and the houses in my preferred neighborhoods are staggeringly expensive, even in this economy, so I like to rent apartments in big, old houses. That way, I get the neighborhood/walking experience without having to shell out. Plus, green living is very important to me, and my city has notoriously limited public transportation. I always rent where I can live near a train station so that my family only needs one car. That said...

There are tons of drawbacks to moving all the time! First, moving is expensive. Even if you do it yourself with friends, you lose a lot of work time packing and unpacking, and those moving trucks aren't cheap. Second, you lose a lot of time changing your address on mail, credit cards, magazines, etc. And often mail just doesn't show up anyway. I missed about months of my New Yorker subscription before I could get everything straightened out. Also, utility setup can be a pain in the butt, especially if you work from home and suddenly find yourself waiting a week for the cable guy.

So yes, while mobility is great, there are definite drawbacks.

I sometimes miss being a renter, especially when something goes wrong with my home. I'm not much of a gardener either, so it's not like it offers any great freedom for me that I would miss out on in an apartment. When my husband and I first got married, we lived in the old section of our town and rented a garage apartment that had been outfitted as an apartment in the 30's. Everything was deco, it was so cool. I would appreciate it more now, having lived in a money pit...er..I mean...house.
