My husband and I have been renovating our home for the past three years. It has been a ridiculously long and frustrating process. Does anyone have any tips for staying motivated?

Nine years ago, my wife and I bought an 186-year-old Greek revival colonial in southeastern Massachusetts. It was originally built as a button factory in 1832, converted to offices in 1854 and then changed hands and was transformed into various apartment arrangements for the next one hundred years or so.

When we moved in, we began transforming it into a single-family. We moved staircases, removed chimneys, changed floor plans, relocated the kitchen, put on a small addition, installed all new electric, plumbing, and duct work... all while living in it at the same time.

Nine years later, we have finally completed all of the structural changes we wanted to make and somehow we are still not done. We've had to "take a break" a few times, but I've found that a sense of humor is one of the primary ingredients that has kept us going!

Oh my gosh, I can not imagine all that work. I hope you plan to live there forever!

I think you are right though. Having a sense of humor and NOT letting unfinished projects become like a festering obsession in your mind.
